The liturgical adaptation project for the Cathedral of Montepulciano aims to reorganize the presbytery area, which currently lacks a clear sense of belonging and harmony with its surroundings. The goal is to create a space that reflects the sacredness of worship while integrating seamlessly with the existing architectural, material, and artistic style. The furnishings feature simple lines and essential forms to avoid overshadowing the church’s rich iconographic heritage. The layout follows a modular grid of 30×30 cm, inspired by the cathedral’s original proportions, with the recurring use of the number 3 as a tribute to Christian symbolism. The project also proposes decorative motifs for the ambo, altar, and bishop’s chair, inspired by Gothic artworks and the mantles of the Virgins depicted in the cathedrals of Montepulciano, Chiusi, and Pienza. Each decorative element symbolically represents one of these locations: the ambo draws inspiration from the altarpiece by Bernardino Fungai (Chiusi), the central altar from Taddeo di Bartolo (Montepulciano), and the bishop’s chair from Lorenzo di Pietro (Pienza).
